► detailed description

Provocative and explicit magazine, edited and with contributions by almost exclusively female journalists and illustrators. Ed.: Janic Guillerez.Though the magazine was the brainchild of a man, Humanoïdes founder and co-publisher Jean-Pierre Dionnet, it lived up to its slogan "fait par et pour les femmes" ("made by and for women"). It fully embraced both the culture of the French feminist movement and the American underground scene. At the time, French feminism was starting to use the media to both shock and satirize contemporary society, and French comics (bande dessinée or BD) were reaching maturity and attracting more adult audiences. Ah ! Nana entered the scene at a perfect time for such material. In addition to comics, it carried a feature called "Histoire de la BD féminine", which profiled female cartoonists from all over the world. Its text features covered other female-centric media, including books, television, film, and music. It also did not hesistate to address the pressing social and political issues of the day. From issue 3 on, each issue revolved around a particular, often provocative, theme (for example, issue 3 itself billed itself as about "Naziism Today", though it dealt more broadly with contemporary racism and anti-Semitism). Issues With strips, photo-novels and cartoons and with contribs. on feminism, politics, film, music, theatre. Illustrated front- and back wrappers. Contributions by Marj Marlowe, Arlette Stroumza, Paula Jacques, Marjorie Alessandrini, Agnes Varda, Wanda Makowski. Ills.: Nicole Claveloux, Chantal Montellier, Irina, Lili White Cat, Liz Bijl, a.o. With thematic issue Les Homanoides Associés.Le sexe et les petites filles,NéNé, Danger:Nazisme;Dossier de la Modes Démodée. The only number published of this rare journal founded and edited by Otto Gustav Carlsund, Theo van Doesburg, Jean Hélion, Léon Tutundjian and Marcel Wantz. Texts by Jean Hélion and Theo van Doesburg. Cover designed by Theo van Doesburg. Art Concret was a single-issue French-language art magazine.. It was the vehicle for a group of abstract artists who wished to differentiate themselves from others gathered around the magazine Cercle et Carré. Eventually most in both groups fused in the wider association of non-figurative artists, Abstraction-Création. Articles in Art Concret championed strictly geometrical art, free of personal interpretation and based on mathematics. It also ridiculed the sloppy and imprecise vocabulary of contemporary art criticism. The concept of Concrete Art championed by the magazine was thereafter taken up by other artists and became influential internationally.

► detailed description

Very rare absolutely complete set of this journal produced by d. a. levy in Cleveland. All published during his lifetime and edited by d. a. levy himself, then after his deartch continued till no 27. The "Swamp Erie Pipe Dream" is the only issue of this remarkable journal , the predecessor to the Buddhist Third Class Junkmail Oracle. This issue includes much Buddhist content, as well as levy's poem "the bells of the Cherokee Ponies," a much-deserved attack on prosecutor George Moscarino, and more information about the police raid on James Lowell's Asphodel Bookshop. The "Oracle"is profusely illustrated with collage art by d.a.levy and others. Heavily Buddhist influenced, promoting drugs and reporting from the counter-culture underground scene of Cleveland, and also news taken from papers of other cities. His radical collage art, concrete poetry, and publishing always put him in conflict with the powers that be in Cleveland: he was arrested and harassed constantly and died under mysterious circumstances (suicide? murder?) at the age of 26 in 1968 .Publication was continued by his friend, Steve Ferguson, until 24l Mar. 1970. Contribs. include Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, John Sinclair, Russell Atkins, Charles Bukowski, Doug Blazek, Paul Puhle, Michae Lesy (photograph), etc; interview with The Velvet Underground, increasing attention to underground music and bands visiting Cleveland (Syeve Miller, Stone Poneys, Jefferson Airplane, The Who) ; passages from The Tibetan Book of the Dead; typical d.a.levy collages throughout, also in the advertising;Religious Collage North American Jewish Tantra;.In no. 15 a piece by Rudi Dutschke etc.; the last issues numbering started where Jim Ferguson took over; no. 18 being the 'Fourth Last Issue' published after the suicide of D. A. Levy, with his photograph on the front page and the text 'Wanted for the assassination of D.A.Levy'. Very rare complete ongoing set from the beginning. (Vol. 2 nos 5 and 6 also as 'The Barking Rabbit or the Buddhist Oracle", ed. by John Rose.) Note: From Aug 1969 a second section KALEIDOSCOPE was published;we only have that section for the 12th last issue0.

► detailed description

Jolas born in the US, but raised in France was a key figure in the Modernist Movement, in particular as publisher of TRANSITION where he published much of Joyce's FINNEGAN'S WAKE, Becket, Kafka, Stein and others edited by Eugene Jolas, with Vincent Huidobro, Hans Arp, Georges Peterson (who was the director). Very rare periodical, inspired by 'Vertigralism', the movement that Jolas had developed in Transition. "Vertigralism adopted the irrational aspects of Surrealism, but did not care to accept the idea of automatic writing or the surrealist Communist political bias (...) and wished to stress language innovation, never a primary concern of Surrealism." (Hofman,Allen & Ulrich, The Little Magazine). Texts and poems in German, French and English from Jolas, Huidobro, Gabrielle Buffet, Hans Arp, Georges Peterson, Léon-Paul Fargue. (Not in Vasseur, Admussen and the Cat.Collectif de la BN).

Published (originally) by Jeff Bale, Jeff Berlin, Mark Berlin, Roseann Berlin, Jello Biafra, Bob Black, Booth, Eric Bradner, Mickey Creep, Peter Dimaria, Jim Donovan, Ray Farrell, Fletch, Henry Hample, Dave Rave (photographs) etc.; from the actual MRR website we quote: History of MRR- Maximumrocknroll is a widely distributed monthly fanzine dedicated to supporting the underground punk rock scene. MRR's 20-year plus history and large, obsessed all-volunteer staff has made its punk rock coverage the most consistently up-to-date and reliable around. Several major media conglomerates control most music produced today. In contrast, MRR reinforces the values of the punk underground by remaining independent and not-for-profit. Maximumrocknroll started in 1977 as a punk rock radio show - one of the first and best of all time. "Tim (Yo) and the Gang" played the latest punk and hardcore sounds from across the world, the U.S., and from their home in the bristling SF Bay Area punk scene. "The gang" included personalities like Jeff Bale, Ruth Schwartz, and Jello Biafra. Punk antiheroes regularly visited as guest DJs, and the roster of touring bands interviewed on the show reads like the track list on a classic old comp. The show was notable for the immediacy of the music, a dedication to international coverage (rare at the time), and for explicitly interjecting progressive politics into the dialogue of punk. The show became hugely successful in the underground, and eventually was broadcast from stations across the U.S. and abroad. Maximumrocknroll, in its zine form, first appeared in 1982 as the newsprint booklet in Not So Quiet On the Western Front, a comp LP released on then-Dead Kennedys' label Alternative Tentacles. The comp included 47 Nevada and Northern California bands, many of whom went on to ruin thousands of impressionable kids for productive civic life by releasing some of the best punk records ever….. The Maximumrocknroll columns section has served as the punk scene's gossipy party line for decades…. By remaining stable on the one hand, flipping the bird with the other, MRR's controversial personality has affected-or infected-the history of punk rock for all time. Added: Collectors Issue Number 8. Noted Damages: no 2 has a tear in first 2 pages without loss of text or image, no.10 has half of an inside page missing and a corner torn of another page.

PERFORMANCE BANK

Fred Truck, Flat envelope: the biennial report.

Des Moines, Iowa, Cookie Press, 1982. Brown accordion folded envelope, 26 x 38 cm, with mounted title label and string tie. The envelope contains a variety of materials relating to Performance Bank, a project by Fred Truck aimed at creating an international database for performances. An explanatory title sheet explains how the Bank accepts proposals for performances (some of which are then realized by Bank personnel) and documents performances realized by others. Three yellow folders labeled Memos, Visuals and XL Visuals contain photocopies documenting performances. A computer print-out titled ‘Bonds of Performance’ and a computer-printed catalogue feature performance proposals and documentation arranged in alphabetical order by artist. Contributions by Anna Banana, Peter Below, Guy Bleus, Jean Brown, Paulo Bruscky, Ulises Carrion, Cavellini, Robert Filliou, Michael Gibbs, E.F. Higgins III, John Held, Waclaw Ropiecki, Guy Schraenen and many others (full list below). Noteworthy items in the envelope are a tiny flipbook by Opal L Nations and a hilarious colour photo series documenting Michael Gibb’s performance as executed by the staff of Performance Bank. Jean Brown's project involved biographical material on George Maciunas. The envelope has moderate rubbing and scuffing, all inserted items are in fine condition. Scarce. No copy found in trade.

Directed by Christian Dotremont (founding member of COBRA) with many contributions by him, logogrammes, and other contributions by Thurber, Pierre Alechinsky, Pol Bury, Asger Jorn, Louis Scutenaire, Michel Butor, etc. Christian Dotremont was born in Tervuren in Belgium in 1922. Through all his life Dotremont experimented with the art - wanted to find the importance of art. Incessant he worked with words - pictures and signs looking and uncovering the facets of art. Dotremont couldn't stop playing with words and concepts - twist them in his own filosofic way, and each time end up with a surprising result. Even though he worked with many aspects the most important was always the words. Dotremont was a poet, he expressed his feelings and thoughts to the spectator on the beautiful whiteness of the paper. He created torn signs from written arabesques, which he named 'Logogramms'. Complete sets are scarrce, because much of the stock of No. 2 is said to be lost by Dotremont

► detailed description

"ToiletPaper" is an artists' magazine created and produced by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari, born out of a passion or obsession they both cultivate: images. Art Direction by Micol TalsoThe magazine contains no text - each picture springs from an idea, often simple, and through a complex orchestration of people it becomes the materialization of the artists’ mental outbursts. Since the first issue in June 2010, "Toilet Paper" has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. It combines the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery. The result is a publication that is itself a work of art which, through its accessible form as a magazine, and through its wide distribution, challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy". A brand new, spectacular collection of twenty-one ToiletPaper-related items: comprised of -a complete set of all thirteen numbered issues of this fascinating, irregularly issued artist's project published to date - 1 (June 2010) with the "Nun" special edition cover / 2 (January 2011) / 3 (June 2011) / 4 (November 2011) / 5 (February 2012) / 6 (July 2012) / 7 (December 2012) / 8 (September 1971) / 9 (February 1981) / 10 (December 1944) / 11 (April 1987) / 12 (Undated) / 13 (Undated) in the collector's edition limited to six hundred and fifty numbered examples packaged with a ToiletPaper folding fan multiple - along with -the hors serie "Tar Art Special Edition" (Summer 2011) that appeared between issues 4 and 5, -the three ToiletPaper spiral-bound calendars issued to date for 2013, 2015, and 2017, -the two "ToiletPaper Book" hardbound anthologies - the second from the deluxe "Platinum Edition", and t - the "I Always Remember A Face, Especially When I’ve Sat on It: A Vinyl Record Compiled by Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari Published by The Vinyl Factory" 12" picture disc in a vinyl sleeve limited to one thousand numbered examples. - Additionally, these come with a special ToiletPaper pictorial canvas tote bag produced for Maurizio Cattelan's 2011 Guggenheim retrospective exhibition. - ISSN 1792-3891

EUR 4,500.00

► detailed description

Ongoing set of 30 issues missing only no 17 (from the total of 34 published) of this amazing California lifestyle magazine. Edited by Leonard Koren, the central topic was WATER and the art and delights of bathing: amazing colourful covers, abundant photographic illustrations and numerous advertisements made of this periodical a unique trendy/glossy/erotic publication: "Gourmet Bathing is a means for enjoying the world...It's a parody of all other enthusiasms...Then again, Gourmet Bathing is the willingness to be silly." (Charlie Haas). Wet broadened the definition of bathing to include other water-related phenomena such as hot tubs, drinking water ("bathing from the inside"), and waterbeds. Gradually the magazine grew to encompass "gourmet bathing" in a metaphorical sense: an eclectic lifestyle grounded in the boundless appreciation of absurdity. Always around the central topic 'gourmet bathing' the content is of a highly varied nature, with features and contributions on and by: Mud Mama. Interview with Rabyn Blake; Athena Tacha (The process of Aging & several other contribs.); Jack Nicholson; Ed Ruscha;Jane Gaskill (Bathroom Bondage); Bob & Bob; Henry Miller (On turning eighty); Priscilala Presley; Mick Jagger;Anthony Friedkin; Brian Hagiwara; Cheryl Lester; Linda Burnham; Timothy Leary; Candice Berger; Leonard Cohen; Iggy Pop; William Burroughs; Captain Beefheart; Brian Eno; Dennis Cooper (John Kennedy jr. Poems); David Hockney; Elvis Costello, etc.etc.; Contributing photographers included Eric Blum, Moshe Brakha, Guy Fery, Jim Ganzer, Brian Hagiwara, Brian Leatart, Jacques-Henri Latrigue, Dana Levy, Claude Mougin, Beverly Parker, Lisa Powers, Herb Ritts, Matthew Rolston, Raul Vega, Guy Webster, and Penny Wolin. Fine set of this highly desirable magazine, of which without doubt not many survived. (see: Gwen Allen -Artists’Magazines. An alternative space for art, p. 310; Koren: Making Water 2012)
