Edited by Frank Gaard, teacher at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.Issues are comprised almost entirely of line drawings, with constant variation in size, printing methods, titles and issue numbers .Art Police was an art zine collectively published by a dozen Minneapolis artists around the painter Frank Gaard. The zine lasted from 1974-1994. Combines Punk and Outsider Art, a mixture of "low brow" humor and "high brow" sensibilities, with political cartoons appearing next to pictures of blowjobs. It is described extensively in Aarons/Roths "In Numbers" (publications by artists since 1955). With a fanciful numbering the publication schedule was highly irregular, and our collation has been following the descriptions in this bibliography. The zine lasted from 1974-1994. Notable Zinesters who have contributed to Art Police were Frank Gaard, Andy Baird, Stuart Mead. Complete list of included ARTPOLICE titles (with issue counts) on request.

► detailed description
Absolutely complete set of this journal produced by d. a. levy in Cleveland. All published during his lifetime and edited by d. a. levy himself, then after his death continued till no 27. The "Swamp Erie Pipe Dream" is the only issue of this remarkable journal , the predecessor to the Buddhist Third Class Junkmail Oracle. This issue includes much Buddhist content, as well as levy's poem "the bells of the Cherokee Ponies," a much-deserved attack on prosecutor George Moscarino, and more information about the police raid on James Lowell's Asphodel Bookshop. The "Oracle"is profusely illustrated with collage art by d.a.levy and others. Heavily Buddhist influenced, promoting drugs and reporting from the counter-culture underground scene of Cleveland, and also news taken from papers of other cities. His radical collage art, concrete poetry, and publishing always put him in conflict with the powers that be in Cleveland: he was arrested and harassed constantly and died under mysterious circumstances (suicide? murder?) at the age of 26 in 1968 .Publication was continued by his friend, Steve Ferguson, until 24l Mar. 1970. Contribs. include Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, John Sinclair, Russell Atkins, Charles Bukowski, Doug Blazek, Paul Puhle, Michae Lesy (photograph), etc; interview with The Velvet Underground, increasing attention to underground music and bands visiting Cleveland (Syeve Miller, Stone Poneys, Jefferson Airplane, The Who) ; passages from The Tibetan Book of the Dead; typical d.a.levy collages throughout, also in the advertising;Religious Collage North American Jewish Tantra;.In no. 15 a piece by Rudi Dutschke etc.; the last issues numbering started where Jim Ferguson took over; no. 18 being the 'Fourth Last Issue' published after the suicide of D. A. Levy, with his photograph on the front page and the text 'Wanted for the assassination of D.A.Levy'. Very rare complete ongoing set from the beginning. (Vol. 2 nos 5 and 6 also as 'The Barking Rabbit or the Buddhist Oracle", ed. by John Rose.) Note: From Aug 1969 a second section KALEIDOSCOPE was published;we only have that section for the 12th last issue0.

Landmark Beat magazine, one of the cornerstones of the 1960's mimeo revolution and poetry scene. "C" was founded to replace the short-lived "Censored Review," which gathered work that had been banned from The Columbia Review. Edited by Ted Berrigan and Rond Padgett. "C" became the organ of 'Second- New York School' (and served as a bridge between the older and younger branches of both The Beats and The New York School. Includes Ginsberg, Burroughs, O'Hara, Koch, Schuyler, Ashbery, Whalen, Orlovsky, Corso, Pagdett, Wieners, Elmslie, Lima, Rothenberg, Gysin, Saroyan,O'Hara, Koch, Schuyler, Ashbery and others.
No.4 was dedicated to Edwin Denby. The cover was designed by Andy Warhol and has on the covers the famed silk-screened images of Denby with Gerald Malanga. It marked the first time Warhol based a silkscreen on a poloroid, a technique that would become one of his defining methods in the 1970's. Most of the other covers are by Joe Brainard. The Brownstein (No. 14) was published in 200 copies. Light damage around staples. There was no Number 12. Jed Birmingham, co-editor of Mimeo Mimeo, has quoted Ron Padgett as suggesting that "C" Comics #1 was intended in the place of issue 12 of C-Magazine, which given format and timing makes sense. ("C" Comics #2, despite its title, was issued under the Boke Press imprint). Numbers 6 and 10 have light soilage to the front cover; No 9 has last page detached and last ab.20 pages stapled upside down; No. 14 light damage around the staples; C-Comics No 1 with damage to left frontpage near the spine (paper loss of ab. 2 cm.) and some edgewear, very light soilage.

The Backstory to City Lights: City Lights Magazine
Cradle of the Beat Generation, where Lawrence Ferlinghetti had a partner named Peter D. Martin. The magazine was edited by Peter Martin, with Charles Polk, Norma Swain, Richard Miller, Wilder Bentley, Arthur Foff, Herbert Kaufman, Antoinette Wilson, MFM Pollack. Contributions by these and by Marjorie Farber, Hans Meyerhoff, V.S.di Suvero, Ken Kolb, George Herriman,Joseph Kostolefsky David Ri Bart Abbott, Philip Lamantia,Leslie Farber, Jack Spicer, etc.. Cover design Don Smith.
Peter D. Martin came to San Francisco from New York in the 1940's to teach sociology. Inspired by the Chaplin film, City Lights, he started this literary magazine in 1952, publishing such key Bay Area writers as Philip Lamantia, Pauline Kael, Jack Spicer, Robert Duncan, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, as "Lawrence Ferling."
In 1953 Martin and Ferlinghetti founded City Lights bookstore, which has had a pretty good run. After two years Martin sold his interest and returned to New York and opened The New Yorker Bookstore.
The inaugural issue opens with Robert Duncan's "Open Letter to City Light", and an an interesting review of San Francisco's, Newsvue Theatre at Market and Mason streets, a third-run movie house that, every Saturday and Sunday, was the city's only theatre featuring the Giant Cartoon Carnival offering 20 cartoons. Also, a wonderful ad for 12 Adler Place, the 'lower bar' for Tommy's restaurant on Broadway, now known as Specs.
In Number 5 (The Television Issue)is a contribution by Lawrence Ferling (in fact Ferlinghetti).

Collection of 31 numbers of COMMONPRESS, a project initiated in 1977 by the Polish artist Pawel Petasz, based on the concept of an art magazine with a floating editorship. Each issue was compiled by a different editor who circulated a call in the Mail Art network naming a special theme for the coming issue. In turn each contributor was encouraged to edit, print, and distribute a future periodical on a specific theme. During the thirteen years of the magazine’s history 32 numbers were actually published between Nos.1 to 56. The numbering is very erratic, and not always in chronological order. Issue No.7 was never published, the concluding issue No. 100 was published in 1989. 31 numbers are offered in this collection. Most issues were collated and printed low budget, comprising of Xeroxed sheets with some original additions. The edition size of Commonpress varied and is largely unknown, only the cited (numbered) edition size is mentioned in the list of offered issues.
Pawel Petasz was the magazine’s coordinator until 1981. Martial law in Poland rendered this role impossible, hence his task was taken over by G. X. Jupitter-Larsen from Canada. The list of Commonpress editors feature a stunning 'who's who' from the international Mail Art community including Peter Below, Guy Bleus, Ulises Carrión, Adriano Spatola and Giulia Niccolai, Klaus Groh, Aart van Barneveld, Guy Schraenen, G. E. Marx Vigo, Vittore Baroni, Johan van Geluwe, György Galántai and Júlia Klaniczay et al.

Bulletin aktueller Ideen.
Nos. 1-7 (all published, complete). Koeln, Wolf Vostell, June 1962 - 1969. Full run in fine to very fine condition, edited, designed & published by Wolf Vostell. Complete with all inserts, paper wraparound bands (when issued) and Josef Beuys' first multiple "Zwei Fräulein mit leuchtendem Brot' in exceptionally good condition.
WITH IMORTANT ADDITION:
Dé-Coll/Age No.7, unique adorned copy of the last issue dated 1974. Composed of Dé-Coll/Age No.7, Elektronischer dé-coll/age, Happening Raum. Cologne, Typos Verlag 1969. The publication documents the creation of the ELEKTRONISCHER dé-coll/age HAPPENING RAUM (1959-1968), produced by Vostell at the invitation of the Institute of Modern Art in Nuremberg and exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1968. The environment was made up of 6 TV sets equipped with auxiliary electro motors that move objects over a glass-strewn floor. Slides showing earlier happenings and works by Vostell were projected on the walls. Vostell made this copy of the book into a delightful artwork. The title page features a handwritten dedication to Inge (most probably Inge Baecker, Vostell's gallerist who initiated her gallery in 1970 with a show by Vostell), 'Für die bewundernswerte Inge mit guten Gerdanken', signed and dated 21.2.1974. Three black cord are taped to the title page by black electrical tape. Attached to the cords are a horn comb (in original plastic container), a BASF sound coil containing the sound of feet stepping on broken glass, and a roll of negatives with photos from Vostell. Added is a transparent plastic box, 19.5 x 19.5 cm, filled with fragmented glass. The plastic box has a crack on the lid, the book shows moderate rubbing on spine and small stains on second page, else in good condition.

Edited by John Howard Lawson, S.T. Farquhar, a.o. (Hollywood Writers Mobilization). Precursor to The Quarterly of Film, Radio, and Television, and Film Quarterly, which is still being published. "The first issue of Hollywood Quarterly, in October 1945, marked the appearance of the most significant, successful, and regularly published journal of its kind in the United States. For its entire life, the Quarterly held to the leftist utopianism of its founders, several of whom would later be blacklisted. The journal attracted a collection of writers unmatched in North American film studies for the heterogeneity of their intellectual and practical concerns: from film, radio, and television industry workers to academics; from Sam Goldwyn, Edith Head, and Chuck Jones to Theodor Adorno and Siegfried Kracauer." (Quoted from the Univ.of Calif.Anthology).

Jolas born in the US, but raised in France was a key figure in the Modernist Movement, in particular as publisher of TRANSITION where he published much of Joyce's FINNEGAN'S WAKE, Becket, Kafka, Stein and others edited by Eugene Jolas, with Vincent Huidobro, Hans Arp, Georges Peterson (who was the director). Very rare periodical, inspired by 'Vertigralism', the movement that Jolas had developed in Transition. "Vertigralism adopted the irrational aspects of Surrealism, but did not care to accept the idea of automatic writing or the surrealist Communist political bias (...) and wished to stress language innovation, never a primary concern of Surrealism." (Hofman,Allen & Ulrich, The Little Magazine). Texts and poems in German, French and English from Jolas, Huidobro, Gabrielle Buffet, Hans Arp, Georges Peterson, Léon-Paul Fargue. (Not in Vasseur, Admussen and the Cat.Collectif de la BN).

Key journal for MODERNISM: "Making no compromise with the public taste" was the motto of this avant-garde periodical, edited by Margaret Anderson, later on joined by Ezra Pound as European editor. Together they turned the "Little Review" into a truly international vanguard publication for the arts and letters. A magazine that featured a wide variety of transatlantic modernists and cultivated many early examples of experimental writing and art. Contributors were American, British, Irish and French Modernists. In addition to publishing a variety of international literature, the Little Review printed early examples of Surrealist artwork and Dadaism. It showed sympathy to feminism and anarchism (Emma Goldman collaborated and raised a scandal with the May 1914 issue). Anderson looked out for such controversial work but for lack of sufficient material published in 1916 a Blank Pages issue as a "Want Ad". The journal has become best known for the first serialized appearance of James Joyce’s "Ulysses", of which Episodes 1-14 are consecutively contained in the issues between 1918-1920. This resulted in a (second) trial for obscenity and helped to establish the journal’ reputation. A first obscenity trial occurred some years earlier when the Post Master refused distribution of the October 1917 issue for a story by Wyndham Lewis. In its history the journal was often criticized and threatened in its existence, such as for the sexually explicit writings of Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven (her photograph Sept/Dec 1920 by Man Ray). There were a number of special issues, such as 'A study of french modern poets', 'An American Number' and issues dedicated to Henry James (with essays about him by Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot a.o.), Remy de Gourmont, W.H. Hudson. In 1923 the editors travelled to Paris, and between 1925 and 1929 Heap became the new editor. Then the journal started to publish more art in addition to literature (2 expositions organised: Machine Age and Intl.Theatre Exposition in NY). There were elaborately produced important special numbers in this period (which are in particularly very good condition contained in the set): Special issue: Brancusi, Picabia, Joseph Stella, Exiles (the Paris avant-garde), Juan Gris, an issue for Van Doesburg/I.K.Bonset, American and the Frernch Surrealists a.o. Work of the following artists is reproduced: Stanislaw Szukalski, William Saphier, Osip Zadkine, Jean de Bosschere, Stuart Davies, Man Ray (various photographs), Hans Arp, Atkinson, de Bosschere, Duchamp, Max Erst, Léger, Joseph Stella, and others. Literary contributions and essays by: James Joyce, Tristan Tzara, Francis Picabia, Apollinaire, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Conrad Aiken, Malcolm Cowley, Louis Lozowick, Jean de Bossschere, Arthur Winthrop, Dorothy Richardson, Marianna Moore, William Butler Yeats, Ribemont Dessaignes, T.S. Elliot, Margaret Anderson,Helen Hoyt, Lupo de Braila, sherwood Anderson, Marjory Siefert, Alexander Kaun, Arthur Symons, Eunice Tietjens,Emma Crane, Hart Crane, Wyndham Lewis, Maxwell Bodenheim, William C. Williams, Giovanni Papini, Emannuel Carnevali a.o. Drawings by Stuart Davies, Max Weber, Jerome Blum, Marie Laurencin, De Segonzac, et al. The final issue of this controversial and notorious literary magazine contained confessions and letters from 62 leading writers and artists of the period, including James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, Sherwood Anderson, Jean Cocteau, T. S. Eliot, Havelock Ellis, Ford Madox Ford, Andre Gide, Emma Goldman, Ben Hecht, Moholy-Nagy, Ezra Pound, Edith Sitwell, Gertrude Stein, William Carlos Williams, a.o., the questions were criticised with Tristan Tzara replying "What the fuck are you doing ?" Publication sequence as follows: Vol.1, Nos.1-11 (March-December, 1914, and January-February, 1915); Vol.2, Nos.1-10 (March-December, 1915, and January-February, 1916); Vol.3, Nos.1-10 (March-November, 1916, and January-April, 1917); Vol.4, Nos.1-8 (May-December, 1917); [Vol. 5-6]January-December, 1918...erroneously numbered]; [January-December, 1919...erroneously numbered]; Vol.6, Nos.9-11 (January, March-April, 1920); Vol.7, Nos.1-4 (May-June, July-August, September-December, 1920, and January-March, 1921); Vol.8, Nos.1-2 (Autumn, 1921 & Spring, 1922); Vol.9, Nos.1-4 (Autumn & Winter, 1922 & Spring and Autumn-Winter, 1923); Vol.10, Nos.1-2 (Spring-Summer, 1924 & Autumn-Winter, 1924-25); Vol.11, Nos.1-2 (Spring & Winter, 1925); Vol.12, Nos.1-2 (Spring-Summer, 1926 & Spring [May], 1929 - the Final Number) . No. 1 (est.100 copies, [iv], 79, [3] pp); No. 2 (est.100 copies, [iv], 80 pp); No. 3 (est. 200 copies, [ii], 82 pp); No. 4 (est. 200 copies, [iv], 114, [2] pp); No. 5 (350 copies, [ii], 96 pp); No. 6 (est. 200 copies, [iv], 113, [7] pp); No. 6 Supplement: “Street Works” (limitation unspecified, [64]pp). Complete run of Acconci and Mayer’s little magazine, one which “followed in the Greenwich Village spirit of self-publishing embodied by Ted Berrigan’s C Magazine, John Ashbery’s Art & Literature, and Ed Sanders’s Fuck You. The work in 0 to 9, however, soon moved off into a very different direction from the post-Beat and New York School poetics as practiced by the editors’ contemporaries in the downtown scene. Instead, 0 to 9 created a niche that can now be located at the beginnings of the Language and performance poetry movements” (Aarons & Roth. In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955, p.33). The magazine contained art, drama, Language, concrete, and experimental poetry, and was distributed by hand to local New York bookstores like the Gotham Book Mart, Eighth Street, and Sheridan Square. Acconci and Mayer employed a curious aesthetic, cobbling together covers using materials as diverse as crumpled-up paper, dustjackets from their own collection, blank sheets, and mimeo stencil paper. It included works by Acconci and Mayer, Gertrude Stein, Anne Waldman, Aram Saroyan, Tom Clark, Ron Padgett, Raymond Queneau, Rosemary Mayer, John Giorno, Clark Coolidge, Robert Greene, Bruce Marcus, Ted Berrigan, Jacksin Mac Low, Dick Higgins, Sol LeWitt, Harry Mathews, Hannah Weiner, Bern Porter, Jerome Rothenberg, Kenneth Koch, Yvonne Rainer, Jasper Johns, Robert Heizer, Michael Smithson, and others.
