Unusually well preserved complete set, Landmark conceptual art magazine, published by Willoughby Sharp, edited by Elizabeth Béar. At the time, Sharp was a New York-based art historian and independent curator and Béar an underground magazine editor who had recently moved to New York from London. They published the first issue in 1970 and collaborated on 13 issues from 1970 to 1976. They both conducted the interviews and conversations with the artists. Avalanche focused on art from the perspective of artists rather than critics, and investigated new forms of art that were developing in the U.S. and Europe with a radical new media format--probing interviews, extensive use of photography and dynamic layouts. ► detailed description

Jolas born in the US, but raised in France was a key figure in the Modernist Movement, in particular as publisher of TRANSITION where he published much of Joyce's FINNEGAN'S WAKE, Becket, Kafka, Stein and others edited by Eugene Jolas, with Vincent Huidobro, Hans Arp, Georges Peterson (who was the director). Very rare periodical, inspired by 'Vertigralism', the movement that Jolas had developed in Transition. "Vertigralism adopted the irrational aspects of Surrealism, but did not care to accept the idea of automatic writing or the surrealist Communist political bias (...) and wished to stress language innovation, never a primary concern of Surrealism." (Hofman,Allen & Ulrich, The Little Magazine). Texts and poems in German, French and English from Jolas, Huidobro, Gabrielle Buffet, Hans Arp, Georges Peterson, Léon-Paul Fargue. (Not in Vasseur, Admussen and the Cat.Collectif de la BN).

Published (originally) by Jeff Bale, Jeff Berlin, Mark Berlin, Roseann Berlin, Jello Biafra, Bob Black, Booth, Eric Bradner, Mickey Creep, Peter Dimaria, Jim Donovan, Ray Farrell, Fletch, Henry Hample, Dave Rave (photographs) etc.; from the actual MRR website we quote: History of MRR- Maximumrocknroll is a widely distributed monthly fanzine dedicated to supporting the underground punk rock scene. MRR's 20-year plus history and large, obsessed all-volunteer staff has made its punk rock coverage the most consistently up-to-date and reliable around. Several major media conglomerates control most music produced today. In contrast, MRR reinforces the values of the punk underground by remaining independent and not-for-profit. Maximumrocknroll started in 1977 as a punk rock radio show - one of the first and best of all time. "Tim (Yo) and the Gang" played the latest punk and hardcore sounds from across the world, the U.S., and from their home in the bristling SF Bay Area punk scene. "The gang" included personalities like Jeff Bale, Ruth Schwartz, and Jello Biafra. Punk antiheroes regularly visited as guest DJs, and the roster of touring bands interviewed on the show reads like the track list on a classic old comp. The show was notable for the immediacy of the music, a dedication to international coverage (rare at the time), and for explicitly interjecting progressive politics into the dialogue of punk. The show became hugely successful in the underground, and eventually was broadcast from stations across the U.S. and abroad. Maximumrocknroll, in its zine form, first appeared in 1982 as the newsprint booklet in Not So Quiet On the Western Front, a comp LP released on then-Dead Kennedys' label Alternative Tentacles. The comp included 47 Nevada and Northern California bands, many of whom went on to ruin thousands of impressionable kids for productive civic life by releasing some of the best punk records ever….. The Maximumrocknroll columns section has served as the punk scene's gossipy party line for decades…. By remaining stable on the one hand, flipping the bird with the other, MRR's controversial personality has affected-or infected-the history of punk rock for all time. Added: Collectors Issue Number 8. Noted Damages: no 2 has a tear in first 2 pages without loss of text or image, no.10 has half of an inside page missing and a corner torn of another page.

MOHAMMED SHEETS. Centro di Communicazione Ristretta.

Plinio Mesciulam was a Turkish artist living in Genova,Italy, and early practitioner of Mail Art. Edited by Alan Davies. Complete set of this little magazine of experimental poetry. A short manifesto in the first issue outlined the magazine's goal, which was to print several poems by each poet alongside other writings, such as letters or criticism. The quality of the contributors and the submissions was very high. Issue one features a great self-referential and visually punning cover by George Schneeman. The scarce second issue features a great drawing by Joe Brainard, who also contributes four short stories to the issue. Other contributors to the first two issues include John Wieners, Fielding Dawson, Gerard Malanga, Lewis Warsh, Aram Saroyan, Bernadette Mayers et al. The final issue inaugurates a shift towards the language tendency, including Ron Silliman's "OF NOTE CONCERNING THE CURRENT STATUS OF aRb" and foreshadows the editor's little magazine A Hundred Posters, which would become one of the seminal publications of the Language Poets. Some scattered foxing and spots soiling, still very good.

With the emergence of new printing techniques and fluorescent inks and the use of new stock (also metallic foils). Oz quickly won renown as one of the most visually exciting publications of its time. Several issues of Oz include psychedelic wrap-around or pull-out posters by Sharp, London design duo Hapshash and the Coloured Coat and others. The all-graphic "Magic Theatre" edition (Oz no. 16), overseen by Sharp and Mora, has been described by British author Jonathon Green as "arguably the greatest achievement of the entire British underground press." The magazine regularly enraged the British Establishment with a range of left-field stories including heavy critical coverage of the Vietnam War (cover of no. 10) and the anti-war movement, discussions of drugs, sex and alternative lifestyles, and contentious political stories, such as the magazine's revelations about the torture of citizens under the rule of the military junta in Greece. In 1970, the editors put a notice in the magazine inviting "school kids" to edit an issue. The opportunity was taken up by around 20 secondary school students who produced "SCHOOLKIDS OZ". This term was widely misunderstood to mean that it was intended for school children, whereas it was a statement that it had been created by them. Oz was one of several 'underground' publications targeted by the Obscene Publications Squad, and their offices had already been raided on several occasions, but the conjunction of schoolchildren and arguably obscene material set the scene for the infamous Oz obscenity trial of 1971.This brought the magazine to the attention of the wider public. John Lennon and Yoko Ono joined the protest march against the prosecution and organised the recording of "God Save Oz" by the Elastic Oz Band to raise funds and gain publicity. The T-Shirt included with the set was meant to raise funds for the defense.

Edited by Joel Sloman, Anne Waldman, and others. Writing in "Running Off The World", Anne Waldman said about the magazine: "The impulse was always toward the immediate community, so it covers most of the so-called New York School plus what comes after, with a bow toward Black Mountain, the Beats, San Francisco Renaissance, and the New York Scene (not 'school'), as well as many independent folk and younger writers from workshops. It was arty, political, experimental, classy, corny, unaligned." - quoted in A Secret Location on the Lower East Side. By Steven Clay & Rodney Philips. (N.Y.: NYPL & Granary Books, 1998), p.188. Contributors include: Vito Acconci, John Ashbery, Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Joe Brainard, Rucy Buckhardt, Jim Carroll, Tom Clark, Clark Coolidge, Robert Creeley, Kenward Elmslie, Dick Gallup, Allen Ginsberg, John Giorno, Barbara Guest, Frank Lima, Gerard Malanga, Bernadette Mayer, Michael McClure, Charles North, Alice Notley, Frank O'hara, Joel Oppenheimer, Ron Padgett, Ed Sanders, Peter Schjeldahl, James Schuyler, Tony Towle, Tom Veitch, Diane Wakowski, Lew Warsh, and Trevor Winfield among others.
