Plinio MESCIULAM

Plinio Mesciulam was a Turkish artist living in Genova,Italy, and early practitioner of Mail Art. This Network Action was launched by him (under the name MOHAMMED in November 1977), by sending 12 identical A-4 size blank letterheads to 12 mail artists, colleagues of Mesciulam and also public figures and institutions (12 member cells, which he termed as Unitas). The participants would create an image or visual message, to be sent back to Mohammed,. Mesciulam would then color photocopy the mailing, assign a unit number, and distribute to the 12 deseignated receivers. With his system Mesciulam extended the concept of "add and pass"first begun by Ray Johnson. Between 1977 and 1981more then 1200 such Unitas were involved.
